Mrs. Deering's Reading List

Shattering Glass

Novel about a high school boy who is convinced by a friend to help the most unpopular boy in school become the "Class Favorite."  Looks like someone will end up dead and someone else will end up in jail.

Or Give Me

Crank

All of my students recommended it to me, but I am not so sure I could say I actually enjoyed the book.  Very disturbing book that describes the destruction of a young girl's life because of addiction to drugs.  The book is written in an original fashion, using inner thought juxtaposed to what is spoken.  Some pages are poetry.  A very quick read.

This Side of Paradisespin

Very suspenseful book.  You cannot guess what will happen next.  Has a totally unpridictable ending.  Love it!

Night

How did I never read this book before this week?  What a different feel it has from other Holocaust books.  It is almost poetry, and leaves you wondering to what depth his experience cut his very soul and crippled it.  The book also makes you realize how important a couple of months can be in a person's life.  The Hungarian Jews were deported only one month before D-Day.  Could it really be that most of them did not survive to see VE Day just one year later?

Nazi Officer's Wife

Totally enjoyed this autobiography of an Austrian Jew who hid right under the German's noses during WWII.

The Husband

Dean Koontz has written a suspense novel that does not include the supernatural but does explore man's passions and drives.  This is one that you cannot put down.
