For very advanced students who show outstanding abilities and behavior.  Membership for this orchestra is by audition only.  This ensemble requires extra rehearsals and has many performances throughout the community.  The Chamber Orchestra has a 30-year tradition of excellence.  They have consistently earned Superior Ratings in adjudications and maintain a very active concert schedule throughout the school year.  In addition, many of the students have been placed in the Florida Music Educators Association All-State Orchestra and the Orange County All-County Orchestra. The Chamber Orchestra has performed throughout the community for the Maitland Women's Club, Wednesday Music Club, Habitat for Humanity, the annual Festival of Lights at Lake Lily, and has been featured on WKMG Channel 6 with Candace Coleman.

FAQ's: Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the best time to begin playing an instrument?  The sooner, the better!  Many students begin their music instruction in elementary school.  Starting an instrument in the 6th grade is very beneficial, and we have had several successful students begin in the 7th or 8th grade as well.
  • If I join in 6th grade, which class will I be in?  If you have never played a stringed instrument before, you will join the Beginning Orchestra.  If you were involved in the OCPS Elementary String Programs, you will be joining Intermediate Orchestra.  Occasionally, students who have had many years of experience and private lessons, will be enrolled in Advanced or Chamber.  An audition for the director is required for these classes.
  •

  • Are stringed instruments hard to play?  Not at all!  There will be some squeaks and squawks along the way, but playing music is easy and fun!
  • What other activities are associated with Orchestra?  Many of our events are coordinated by our team of orchestra officers.  Each year the orchestra holds social events that have included a beginning of the year "Kick-Off" Party, Movie Nights in the Orchestra room, parties to celebrate holidays or orchestra achievements, and special events for graduating 8th graders. This year, we have already had a "Fall Festival" and our first "Orchestra Cookout" and we just returned from a 4 day musical tour of Atlanta!  We also take field trips to perform in events throughout our own community.  MMS Orchestra more than a class.  We are a musical family that welcomes all members and we enjoy each others company!

  • Do I have to own a string instrument to be in orchestra?  The MMS Orchestra has instruments available for students, the maintenance fee is $50-$100 per year, depending on which instrument the student chooses to play.  If the family cannot afford this, financial assistance is available.  Many families choose to rent their instruments from local music stores.  Students who have been playing a stringed instrument for some time are encouraged to purchase their own instruments.

  • Are there any other financial responsibilities?  Students will need to purchase an Essential Elements Method book that corresponds to their experience level.  Music stores carry these books for approximately $7.00.  Students will also need to purchase accessories for the instrument they choose to play.  This includes Shoulder rests for violins and violas ($7.00-$20.00 at most music stores), Endpin stops for cello and bass ($5.00-$10.00) and rosin for each instrument ($2.00-$10.00).  In addition, there is a recommended donation of $30 to the orchestra that will provide sheet music, entry fees for Florida Orchestra Association Events, bus transportation and general operating expenses.
  • Can students keep the sheet music?  No, the sheet music is property of the MMS Orchestra and is returned to the orchestra library for use in future concerts.
  • Are private lessons required?  No, but they are encouraged for students who want to improve a faster rate.  Our orchestra also has a tutoring program with 8th graders and students from WPHS, where young musicians can get extra help.

  • How often should I practice?  Students can decide the practice schedule that works best for them, but in general, 30 minutes a day is recommended.
  • What are students graded on?  Students are graded on:
    • daily participation
    • daily performance of their music
    • performance tests
    • attendance at concerts
    • written assignments and projects
  • Are concerts required?  Yes!  The concerts are great fun and the highlight of the students' musical progress!  Parents are encouraged to invite as many family members and friends as possible to support their young musicians.
