Introduction

I was sitting at home last week in my 50 ft. by 30 ft. ranch house when I heard drip, drip and finally some more drips!  As you know a leaky roof needs to be repaired at once.  Unfortunately, I have a month long vacation planned to an island scheduled to start in two days.  Fortunately, I have just enough time to remove the old roof down to the trusses.  This is where I need your help; I am looking for a responsible person to finish the construction of my roof.  Are you that person?

 TASK

Your job will be to research the steps to constructing a roof from scratch (or at least from the plywood up.) It is very important to use only the best materials so that my roof will last for 30+ years. Good luck!

PROCESS

Find the importance of the slope of my roof. In order to make an intelligent decision you must be able to demonstrate a masterful understanding of slope. Write a paragraph about the importance of slope on a roof, the slope of my roof, and if it is acceptable.

Decide how many square feet of material you will need to purchase. These are the materials I would like used on my roof.

Now that you have prices on all of the materials, make an estimate sheet with the amount of materials needed and the cost.

Don’t forget labor! Roofers charge approximately $250 per "square"

Don’t forget tax! I live in Orange County and tax is 6.5%. Do you charge tax on labor???

Prepare an all inclusive cost sheet and I will let you know if you get the job!!

CONCLUSION

Identify 3 different areas of math used to solve my problem.  Make sure you support your answers!

Name two other occupations besides carpentry where math is essential.

 

EVALUATION

Place all of your work neatly and orderly together with a cover sheet. Include:

a. All calculations shown (20 points)

b. The importance of slope (15 points)

c. Square feet of roof (10 points)

d. Cost table with amount of material needed, cost of each, labor, tax, and final cost.(30 points)

e. Two conclusion questions (15 points)

f. Compiled neatly and orderly with a cover sheet. (10 points)
