Magnet Programs

Centralized Application Process

All magnet program applicants must submit applications to School Choice Services for processing.

All students who reside in Orange County are eligible to apply for magnet programs. It is suggested that students begin by choosing a program area of interest.

The district application will be the only application accepted for consideration. The district appplication can be found at all schools, the district office, or downloaded from this website. The application can be mailed or delivered to the School Choice Services Office, ELC 7, 445 W. Amelia Street, Orlando, FL 32801. No faxes will be accepted.

All information on the student application must be complete, correct and legible. The application must be signed by the parent or guardian to be eligible for selection. High School Applications must also be signed by the student's guidance counselor. An application must be completed and submitted for each child applying for magnet programs. A maximum of two choices are allowed on the application and one application per student is permitted.

Important Timelines

Applications for 08-09 available on this website on October 1, 2007
Priority Application Deadline is February 15, 2008
Applicants will be notified of acceptance/non-acceptance by mail by April 1, 2008

If the applicants do not register, their seats will be assigned to another student.

Selection and Assignment Process

All eligible applicants who meet the priorioty application deadline of February 15, 2008 will be considered for available seats. If there are more eligible applicants requesting admission to a specific magent program than the number of seats available, a lottery will be utilized. The computerized lottery selection process is managed by an independent contractor, Joseph White and Associates.

Siblings of middle and high school magnet studetns will not be given preference for admission to the middle and high school magnet programs. Siblings of elementary magnet students will be given preference for admission. A sibling is defined as a brother, sister, half-brother, half sister, stepbrother or stepsister who lives in the same household and has the same address. Parents must complete an application for each sibling and submit it by the deadline. The two siblings must be attending the magnet program at the same time in order for this preference to be considered.

Once a student has been admitted to a magnet program, he or she is expected to remain in that program until reaching the highest grade level offfered by that school. Students do not have to re-apply for admission into the same program once they have been accepted.

Maintenance Criteria

All magnet programs have required parent and student contracts. Students will be expected to maintain a certain grade point average and have minimal absences. Magnet students will be expected to follow the Code of Student Conduct and have exemplary behavior.

If the contract is violated, a meeting will be held with the magnet program coordinator, teachers, parent(s), and student. The student will be placed on probation for one grading period. If the violation is corrected during that time period, the probation will no longer apply. If there is insufficient improvement at the conclusion of the probation period, the student will be exited from the program.

If a student chooses to exit the program or becomes ineligible after the probation period, he/she will be required to return to the zoned school at the end of the first semester or the end of the school year, whichever occurs first.
